Huchuy Qosqo & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (4-Day Alternative Inca Trail) is one of the best alternative treks to Machu Picchu from Cusco, combining breathtaking mountain scenery, authentic cultural encounters, and a unique Inca Trail experience. This 4-day adventure follows a lesser-known Inca route connecting Cusco with the Sacred Valley, tracing the Urubamba River before joining the famous Short Inca Trail.
The journey ends with an unforgettable entrance to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Intipunku) at sunset — one of the most iconic and rewarding arrivals in Peru.
Along the trail, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over Cusco, hike through remote Andean communities, and walk alongside llamas and alpacas. You will also explore impressive archaeological sites such as Huchuy Qosqo, offering a deeper connection to Inca history away from the crowds.
With Travel On Green, everything is fully organized for a seamless experience — including Machu Picchu permits, Inca Trail tickets, transportation, high-quality camping gear, comfortable hotels, and professional local guides. Begin your adventure just outside Cusco at Tambomachay, the starting point of your scenic trek. Hike along an off-the-beaten-path Inca trail through high-altitude landscapes, local communities, and breathtaking Andean views. Arrive at the impressive archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo, where you will camp under the stars surrounded by history and nature.
Descend from Huchuy Qosqo into the Sacred Valley, arriving at the traditional Andean village of Chinchero. Enjoy an authentic textile demonstration by local artisans, learning about ancient weaving techniques. Continue to Urubamba for a delicious buffet lunch. In the afternoon, travel to Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town, where you will spend the night.
Start the famous Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, entering through lush cloud forest and visiting remarkable sites such as Wiñay Wayna. Enjoy a box lunch along the trail before reaching the iconic Sun Gate, where you will get your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Descend to Aguas Calientes and spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
Wake up early to explore Machu Picchu on a guided tour, discovering its most important temples, terraces, and viewpoints. After the visit, return to Aguas Calientes and board the panoramic Vistadome Train at 14:55. Enjoy the scenic journey back to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transportation to Cusco.
Your journey begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco, followed by a short drive to Tambomachay (3,700 m / 12,139 ft), the starting point of this exclusive trekking route. From here, you will hike along a little-traveled ancient Inca trail, surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes, high-altitude lagoons, and grazing alpacas. As you ascend gradually, you’ll reach the highest point of the day, offering panoramic views of the Sacred Valley and surrounding mountains.
After crossing remote passes and enjoying a freshly prepared lunch in nature, you will descend towards the remarkable archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo (3,650 m / 11,975 ft). This hidden Inca complex features impressive stone terraces, ceremonial structures, and stunning views over the Sacred Valley. You will set up camp nearby, enjoying a hot dinner under the stars in a peaceful and uncrowded environment.
After breakfast at camp, explore the fascinating ruins of Huchuy Qosqo with your guide, learning about its historical significance as an important Inca administrative and agricultural center. Then begin your descent through scenic trails and traditional farming communities, eventually reaching the picturesque Andean village of Chinchero (3,762 m / 12,343 ft), known as the birthplace of Andean textiles.
Here, you will experience an authentic textile demonstration by local weavers, who will share ancient techniques using natural dyes and alpaca fibers. After this cultural immersion, continue to Urubamba (2,871 m / 9,419 ft) for a delicious buffet lunch in the heart of the Sacred Valley. In the afternoon, travel to Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town with original stone streets, where you will relax and spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
We’ll start the day with an early pickup from your hotel at approximately 5:30 AM, ensuring you board one of the first trains toward Km 104 (Chachabamba), the gateway to the Short Inca Trail. This scenic one-hour journey transitions beautifully from the Andean highlands into the lush cloud forest. Upon arrival, you’ll cross a suspension bridge and proceed to the first control point, where your original passport will be required for entry.
Your trek begins with a guided exploration of the archaeological site of Chachabamba, followed by a 3–4 hour moderate ascent to Wiñay Wayna—one of the most impressive and well-preserved sites along the Inca Trail. Along the way, your expert guide will provide in-depth insights into key structures such as ceremonial temples, cascading water features, storage facilities, and intricate agricultural terraces. A freshly prepared boxed lunch will be enjoyed in a scenic setting.
The journey continues with a relaxed one-hour hike to the iconic Sun Gate (Intipunku), where you’ll be rewarded with your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu, framed by Huayna Picchu, the Urubamba River, and the surrounding Andes. After taking time to appreciate the landscape and capture the moment, you’ll proceed to the upper հատված of Machu Picchu for approximately one hour—an ideal time to photograph the citadel with fewer crowds and softer afternoon light.
To conclude the day, a comfortable 30-minute bus ride will take you down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). You’ll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and unwind overnight in a carefully selected 3-star hotel.
On the final day, we culminate the journey with a sunrise visit to Machu Picchu—the iconic “Lost City of the Incas.” After an early breakfast, guests take one of the first buses up the mountain, arriving ahead of peak crowds to experience the site in its most serene and photogenic state.
A curated 2.5-hour guided exploration follows, covering Machu Picchu’s most significant landmarks—from its ceremonial temples and royal residences to its sophisticated agricultural terraces—delivered with clear storytelling and expert context. For those seeking an added challenge, optional hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain can be arranged in advance (subject to permit availability).
After the visit, guests descend to Aguas Calientes for lunch at their leisure, before boarding the Vistadome Panoramic train for a scenic return to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transfer ensures a seamless journey back to Cusco, with arrival at the hotel expected around 7:30 PM.

This 4-day Machu Picchu adventure seamlessly blends two of Cusco’s most iconic experiences: the Huchuy Qosqo and the Short Inca Trail. To ensure a smooth and enriching journey, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the logistics, accommodation arrangements, and luggage management throughout the trip.
Ensure these essential items remain in your personal daypack and are carried with you at all times throughout the journey.
For the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, strategic layering is essential. As you traverse diverse ecological zones—from high-altitude mountain paths to warmer valley sections—temperatures can fluctuate significantly throughout the day. The optimal approach is to wear lightweight, breathable layers that can be easily adjusted in response to changing conditions. Here’s what we recommend wearing:
Travel smart by keeping your daypack light and comfortable. Please note that entry to Machu Picchu allows backpacks up to 40 × 35 × 20 cm (16 × 14 × 8 inches). We recommend leaving any extra belongings at your hotel before your Day 2 visit.
Trekking poles can be very helpful for navigating stairs and downhill sections on Day 1. If you plan to use them, they must be equipped with rubber tips. Please keep in mind that trekking poles are not permitted inside Machu Picchu.
Duffel Bag Allowance (Up to 7 kg / 15 lb):
We provide a personal duffel bag for your trek, which will be carried by the professional porters from Travel On Green throughout the journey, transporting your belongings from one campsite to the next. Please note that this bag will not be accessible during hiking hours, so we recommend packing all essential items for the day—such as water, snacks, and personal gear—in your daypack.
Pack smart and keep your gear light for the trek, focusing only on essential items. During the hike, you’ll carry your own daypack, while porters or pack animals have limited space for extra luggage—so efficient packing is key for a comfortable and hassle-free Inca Trail experience.
You may send a small carry-on directly to your hotel in Aguas Calientes, with a maximum weight of 5 kg (11 lb) per person. If you don’t have an extra bag, we can provide a duffle for your convenience.
Please pack only the essentials for your overnight stay and Day 2 (fresh clothes, toiletries), while keeping all Day 1 necessities in your daypack.
We recommend requesting the carry-on transfer immediately after booking so we can coordinate everything seamlessly in advance.
Embark on a seamless, high-impact journey that blends cultural depth with immersive adventure across Peru’s most iconic landscapes. Begin in the Huchuy Qosqo, where you’ll engage with living heritage through ancient archaeological sites, vibrant local markets, and authentic Andean communities. Continue with the Short Inca Trail, a curated trekking experience that delivers extraordinary scenery and historical insight, culminating in a powerful arrival at Machu Picchu.
This experience is designed to deliver both emotional resonance and lasting value—combining exploration, storytelling, and world-class destinations into a single, unforgettable journey.
The Huchuy Qosqo & Short Inca Trail Trek is a unique 4-day adventure in the Peruvian Andes that combines two incredible routes into one unforgettable journey. This immersive experience merges the off-the-beaten-path hike to Huchuy Qosqo with the world-famous Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, offering the perfect balance of cultural discovery, scenic trekking, and iconic Inca history.
The Huchuy Qosqo Trek is a unique alternative route to the Sacred Valley, leading you to the impressive Inca archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo, meaning “Little Cusco” in Quechua. This scenic hike begins near Tambomachay, just a short 15-minute drive from Cusco.
Along the trail, you will journey through breathtaking Andean landscapes, passing traditional villages, agricultural fields, and high-altitude lagoons, all while experiencing authentic local culture. The trek culminates at the fascinating ruins of Huchuy Qosqo before descending into the heart of the Sacred Valley, making it one of the best off-the-beaten-path hikes near Cusco.
The Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the perfect alternative to the Classic Inca Trail, offering a shorter yet unforgettable trekking experience of approximately 16 km (10 miles). Your journey begins with a scenic train ride from Ollantaytambo to Km 104, also known as Chachabamba, where the hike officially starts.
On the first day, you will explore the breathtaking archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive Inca ruins along the trail, before continuing your ascent to the iconic Sun Gate. From here, enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu—an unforgettable moment, especially during the late afternoon light.
After this incredible experience, descend to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu, where you will spend the night in a comfortable hotel. The following day, return to Machu Picchu to fully explore the ancient Inca citadel with a guided tour.
Combining the Huchuy Qosqo trek with the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu creates a unique multi-day adventure that blends culture, nature, and history in one unforgettable journey. The experience begins with a scenic hike through remote Andean landscapes and traditional communities, leading you to the remarkable Inca site of Huchuy Qosqo.
From there, the journey continues along the iconic Short Inca Trail, where you will walk original Inca paths and enter Machu Picchu through the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku), enjoying your first panoramic view of the citadel.
This alternative Inca Trail route is significantly less crowded than the Classic Inca Trail, offering a more peaceful and authentic trekking experience with stunning mountain scenery. One of the highlights is the opportunity to visit Machu Picchu twice: first in the afternoon with fewer visitors, and again the following day with a complete guided tour. It is also the perfect option when Classic Inca Trail permits are sold out, allowing you to experience the magic of the Inca Trail without missing its most iconic sections.
The ideal time to hike the Huchuy Qosqo Trek and the Short Inca Trail is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, travelers can expect sunny skies, minimal rainfall, and excellent trekking conditions—perfect for enjoying panoramic Andean landscapes.
In contrast, the rainy season from November to March is generally not recommended, as heavy rains can lead to slippery and muddy trails, reduced visibility, and an increased risk of landslides, making the hike more challenging and less for visitors.
While hiring a guide for the Huchuy Qosqo trek is not strictly required, it is strongly recommended to enhance your overall experience. A knowledgeable local guide will enrich your journey with in-depth historical insights, cultural context, and ensure your safety along the route.
For the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, a licensed guide is mandatory, and permits can only be secured through an authorized tour operator. Booking with a certified agency guarantees access, proper logistics, and a seamless trekking experience.
During the main trekking days of this Inca Trail adventure, you will hike approximately 8 to 16 km (5–10 miles) per day, averaging around 11 km (7 miles) daily through diverse Andean landscapes. The final day is more relaxed, dedicated to exploring Machu Picchu, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the archaeological site with roughly 2 to 2.5 hours of light walking.
The Huchuy Qosqo Trek combined with the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is considered a moderately challenging adventure, featuring steep ascents, descents, and high-altitude terrain. This trek is best suited for travelers with a good level of physical fitness and, ideally, previous experience hiking at altitude.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, it is highly recommended to spend at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek, allowing your body to adjust to the elevation and reducing the risk of altitude-related issues.
When you book your Inca Trail trek with Travel On Green, all essential camping equipment is fully included to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free experience. This includes high-quality tents, warm sleeping bags, and insulated sleeping pads, along with freshly prepared meals throughout the entire trek.
For your personal comfort, we recommend bringing a few essential items such as a headlamp, toiletries, and a small daypack to carry your daily necessities during the hike.
Due to the limited availability of permits for the Short Inca Trail, spaces sell out quickly throughout the year. It is highly recommended to book your trek at least 4 to 6 months in advance, especially if you are planning to travel during the peak season (May to September). For the best chance of securing your preferred travel dates, train schedules, and accommodations, booking even earlier is strongly advised.
